The Avatar guitar speaker cabinets are sweet deals. These are strong guitar speaker cabs and loaded with some of the best speakers you can find.
I bought a used, closed back Avatar speaker cab at L & M in Edmonton in August 2006. It has a Fender style grill, and the speakers in it are Celestion Seventy 80.
I run this cab with my Reverend Hellhound, and boy - does it ever improve the sound from the Hellhound! A small tube amp combo tend to sound boxy, due to the small combo cabinet. Hook up a well build 2x12 cab like the Avatar and you are in business!
This Avatar cab I got is probably few years old. Avatar Speaker Cabs don't offer the Seventy 80 speaker anymore, as far as I know. It is a "budget speaker", compared to the best Celestions or Eminence speakers. Still, this cab sounds real good anyway.
After a few months of usage, I upgraded the speakers in the cabinet. My little tube combo just sounds like a huge amp now. Very impressive.
The speakers I chose are Eminence Wizards. They are fairly bright and clear, and make me think Fender. However, they still have a bit of their own voice, and it seems to be an effective speaker. With the closed back, I get a punchy, rich tone from my amps. I am impressed with all Eminence speakers I've tried so far.
In summary, the Avatar speaker cabs are light, well built and very affordable. I am not aware of any other speaker cabinets in this price range that sound this good. I highly recommend the Avatar cabs!
