Lab Series L-5 Review

Legend Rock'n Roll 50

The Lab Series L5 is a 2x12 solid state combo amp made in the 70s. Part of its fame comes from BB King, who has been using Lab Series amps from time to time.

The L-5 has a very impressive clean tone, considering it's made in the 70s. Today's modeling amps are so much more advanced, but there's something to be said for a simple solid state combo like the L-5. It does one thing good - producing a nice, clean tone. Overdrive? Well, sort of, but nothing to write home about. It doesn't have many features, although it has a very cool compressor built in. I am sure that was way advanced back in the day.

This amp could use some better speakers. With a speaker upgrade, you have a powerful, reliable 2x12 combo that is great for country and blues. It is not as dynamic sounding as a good tube amp, but it's fun piece of old technology that still sounds decent with today's standards. Some people call it a "poor man's Fender Twin".
