Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp Review

Mesa-Boogie has been in the business of making powerful, versatile amps for decades now, and the Studio Preamp, from the 80s, is a good sounding preamp and the choice of many studio professionals during the 80s.

Features

It has lots of features:
a 2 channels shared EQ
5-point EQ
"fat" and "bright" switches
channel switching (footswitch)
reverb & EQ switching (footswitch)
effects loop
2 main outs
2 recording outs
All tube 4 12ax7
1 12ax7 for the reverb tank
1 volume which affects both channels
1 master volume which affects both channels

Sound

It is a very versatile preamp, and it covers a range of different tones. The lead tones you can get from this thing are pretty amazing - singing overdrive and screaming distortion is all in there. The clean tones are very clean and sparkly. Metal players can also have a lot of fun with this preamp - it has tons of gain if you want it.

Overall impression

In summary, if you find one of these used for a good price and you have a good power amp to run it through, get it. I regret I got rid of mine.

For another cool amp with balls, check out the Peavey Windsor 120 watts of tube tone.
