Guitar Pro 6 Review

I am very happy to see a new version of Guitar Pro being released. I have been using Guitar Pro 5 for about a year now, and it has been very useful for teaching. It's great to be able to enter notes easily by clicking the virtual fretboard, and instantly be able to hear what it sounds like. For teaching, this has been a real time saver for me. However, over time, I have also discovered some issues and quirks, but the new version has dealt admirable with these.

I am a Mac user, and with GP5, only a single document could be open at a time. Closing the document would also shut down the whole program. The Virtual Fretboard had a major bug on the Mac - it wouldn't display properly at all. The most annoying thing was how the feature for notation correction worked. If you entered the wrong time values for notation, the correction feature would sometimes screw up royally, making the score look something like a message from a Marsian. Since writing notation is one of my weak spots, this has been very frustrating and annoying for me.

Now, Guitar Pro 6 has more or less removed, or solved, all these problems. I have only been using Guitar Pro 6 for a few days, but my impression is that everything works much better and makes much more sense than before. It doesn't crash as easily as the previous version either. The development team have taken a promising piece of software and turned it in to something solid and much more professional.

One minor complaint - it took several hours to get all the plugins and sounds downloaded. Their server must have been slow at that time, but it should have been quicker to get everything installed.

The user interface has gotten a big overhaul, and it is much, much better than before. You can have multiple documents open, and there is a new toolbar, which makes is much more convenient to use the program. It is much easier to enter notes, and the sounds are so much better.

Guitar Pro 6 now has Full Realistic Sound Engine (RSE) for non-rock band instruments (grand piano, strings, and so on.) You can also have multi-track lyrics, which can be handy.

There are also post-production sound features such as attack, and there is also a keyboard shortcut for making notes have longer duration - this can be very handy!

Do check out all the features at the Guitar Pro website - it's all explained there much better than I've done here.

Overall, the new Guitar Pro 6 is much easier to use, quicker to write notation and Tab with. The sound is much better too, with more realistic instruments. I definitely recommend Guitar Pro 6. It is not a small upgrade from version 5 - it is like a whole new program, and very much worth the cost.

You can try Guitar Pro 6 for free by clicking the banner below. The main limitation of the free trial is that you can't save files or open files outside of those provided in the download.

Update! This is great. You can get Guitar Pro for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. I love it! Very, very handy, and a great app too.

you can find the variations in the drop down menu at the top for the tracks. then, in the effects chain, you can pick what variation to use and setup effects. I love gp6, very professional tool. Not sure how ppl can say it sucks. Can you read and write music?

Thanks Robert, for taking the time to illuminate me in the ways of GP6. I'm now a convert.

I've had GP6 for awhile now and I can't find where you can choose the sound variations of your track/instrument like you did in GP5. Although GP5 is less visually appealing it is clearly the superior version.

The download is not bad if you have windows 7, i suggest to buy it online on amazon if you are a first time user, you get the disk that i thought was pretty good with downloading, so i would suggest not downloading it online for you probably will have problems.

Advice: Sell your mac, buy a significantly better PC and have money left over, and stop blaming programmers for not writing proper code for your inferior and overly-un-programmer-friendly architecture.

My experience is less positive. I am virtually unable to load GP5 format tabs without GP6 blowing up. Since that represents 99% of the tabs I have... it's back to V5 until Arobas gets its act together. BTW, no problem downloading now.

The problem with downloading Guitar Pro 6 is much greater than you indicate. I have spent several WEEKS trying to download all of Guitar Pro 6 and still don't have it. I have tried to contact their tech support at least 12 times. They do not reply! The do not fix their site and the software is not as useful without the complete version.

My advice: Don't buy it online or buy Sibelius instead!
