Line 6 Toneport

So, I bought a Line 6 Toneport UX1. One of the reasons I bought a Vox Valvetronix last year was that I had hoped it would work to use the line out feature into my sound card. Well, it didn't do that too well. It doesn't sound good to my ears.

I have been thinking about how to get my guitar recorded in a simple and effective way. Micing my amps sound great, but I end up bugging everyone else in the house and the microphone picks up the dog barking, etc.

Using my pedals line in into the sound card doesn't sound great either. They don't have speaker simulation features, so it's less than ideal.

My thoughts have been to get a amp modeling unit, like Line 6 POD XT, Behringer V-Amp, Vox Tonelab or similar. I didn't really want a big, clumsy unit made for playing through and amp - I just wanted something for recording only.

The Line 6 Guitarport seemed liked an interesting alternative, and then I heard of the Line 6 Toneport. I asked people for advice, and it turned out one guy had a Toneport he didn't use. So, I just bought it. I haven't received the Toneport yet, but I am looking forward to trying it out!

Why did I buy it? Well, there are a few reasons:

I'll write more about the Toneport once I get it. Being able to get down guitar tracks quick and easy is something I hope I will be able to do with this unit, and something I really look forward to.

The Line 6 Toneport UX1 can be had from Musician's Friend

I have a Toneport UX1 and I am not all into the gearbox/podfarm software it comes with. I have been messing around with Amplitube 2 and like the sound I get from it a lot better then Gearbox/Podfarm. However I have only ever tried the gearbox/podfarm with the stuff it comes with. I have heard if you buy the metal pack for gearbox you can get better tones from it. I like Amplitube 2 better though and can dial in a decent tone fairly easy. Ive also have messed with Peavey's ReValver Mk III and it seems pretty good however I didn't really get into it as much as I did with Amplitube 2. I am going to sell my Toneport UX1 as I am not happy with the amount of control it has or the amount of I/O jacks it has. Probably going to get a Focusrite Saffire LE.

Sean, yes I got it quite some time ago. I like it too, but I need some monitors. I don't like using headphones for guitar tones. I use decent Sennheiser headphones but I don't like the distorted tones through headphones. Sounds great through my stereo speakers after it's been recorded though.
The Toneport sure is a nice little unit, more than worth the price.

Have you gotten your TonePort yet? I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I have a UX2 and I find it very simple to use and it works great on both PC and Mac. It totally beat the latency issues I had found with other direct recording devices. The GearBox models are definitely great for simple recording. I liked them so much that I went out and bought a Pod XT Live so that I could replicate those same sounds when playing out.

The XT Live didn't quite live up to my expectations. I ran it straight into a PA and always found the sound to be pretty muddy. Probably could have tweaked it a bit with EQ, but before I was able to do that I got intrigued by newer MFX units that had tubes built in. Tried a ZOOM G9 first and didn't care much for it because it seemed to be geared more towards high gain/shredders, which is not my thing. I considered a Pod X3 Live, but heard too many quality control complaints. Finally settled on a Vox Tonelab LE and fell in love the first time I plugged into it. Awesome warm vintage sounds and real natural tube-type dynamics. You can even use your guitar's volume to control whether or not the amp model distorts or is clean. No other pedal I found even came close to doing that.

Thanks for the reviews and lessons. I enjoy your site quite a bit.

I love your site. Tons of good info and great guitar playing. I have a Toneport UX1 and am astounded by how good it sounds. The amp models sound-I swear-as good as the vintage amps I have owned over the 30 yrs. I have played guitar. I have owned a Plexi Marshall and a Fender Twin and have played through various other vintage equipment and this thing really cops the sound and tactile feel of the amps it models. Truly astounding! Particularly fun and authentic Echoplex-great warble. I think you will find it well worth the miniscule price.

Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback!

I use some cheap strings called "Xaviere", 09 - 42.

You can go the forums and request whatever you want, I cannot guarantee I will/can do it though, but asking never hurts ... :)

Hello,
I have been a very regular reader of your blog ever since i discovered it last year. I have bought a squier 51 and a Vox AD30vt purely from watching and listening to your clips. I love the technique and gear demos and have always wanted to say thank you for all the time you put into sharing your music with the rest of us.
I would like to ask you what make and gauge of strings you use on the 51 and blue strat? I have found this is a very cheap way to alter the sound of a guitar by different sizes and brands, and i really like the sound you get.
You made a positive impact on my playing and gear choices. Many thanks. Mike

P.S. Do you still take requests for demos on how to play a particular song?
