Removing vocals from a track

Have you ever wanted to remove vocals from a track? The cool thing is this can be done fairly well, using free software. Here’s how to use remove the vocals from most music tracks in a few simple steps.

Usually, vocals are placed in the center. You probably know that sometimes the bass is pushed more towards the right channel, and rhythm guitar could be more towards the left, etc. Most often, the vocals are put right at the center.

By using Audacity (free software), we can split the stereo track invert one channel. This cancels out the vocals but leaves the rest intact.

Now, songs with a lot of vocal effects could be a bit messed up buy this process. Tunes that have plenty of reverb may leave an echo behind as well.

So how do you do this, practically speaking?
