Squier '51 bridge replaced

So I got my parts from GFS (guitarfetish.com) and it looks like pretty good parts. I started with my Squier '51. First step was to install the new replacement bridge. Both the old and the new bridge is fastened to the body with 5 screws. However, two of the screw holes for the replacement bridge does not line up with the holes left from the old bridge. No problem though, I just took my electric drill and made two small holes. The new bridge was fastened and ready in no time - very easy to do!

how I removed the nut

Next, I had bought a Graph Tech Tusq nut (PQ 5000), so I started removing the old, crappy plastic nut. I used a rubber mallet to hammer gently on the side of the nut, and it started to com loose pretty quick. I gently wiggled it until it came off completely.

The new nut is a Strat nut, and I noticed it's slightly longer and the string spacing is not the same as the old nut. Oh well, that is all I have for now. I'll order a different nut and leave this one in here for now. I need to file it down a bit, because it's too high. I won't do that until I get a new nut, though. These nuts seem very good and hard - a huge improvement over those horrible pieces of plastic they put on cheap guitars.

Then it was time to replace the push/pull pot. I opened up the '51, took a look at the old pot that I didn't like (the tapering of the volume is not to my liking). Low and behold, the new "improved" pot is IDENTICAL to the old pot! That was a surprise. GFS claim this is a good pot. This lead me to believe my old pot could have been just fine, but instead maybe the way it is wired makes the volume tapering that way it is - which I don't like. I prefer a volume knob like on a Strat, where you can roll it off down to 5, and the volume is pretty much the same but it cleans up the tone. I do this on my Tele and I can have quite a bit of overdrive going but if I turn down the volume knob to 5, it's a semi-clean tone great for rhythm playing.

I went ahead with finishing the soldering of the push/pull pot anyway, to see if there would be any difference. Turns out there is no difference - the knob works the same way. I am no electronics guru, so if you know anything about this, please let me know. I'm gonna try and find out how get this wired correctly so I can get the darn volume knob to work like I want it to work!

In the end, the guitar sounds better. The bridge upgrade did wonders - less of that brittle, rattly tone and more guts. I highly recommend this bridge upgrade if you have a Squier '51 - the bridge is like 11-12 bucks - definitely worthwhile doing!

I will work on the SX Strat next, once I get the neck I am waiting for. The SX Strat will receive a new quality vintage-style bridge, and new electronics. That's for a different day though.

I used a curved bottom nut - Tusq PQ 5000 - it worked for me. You can easily sand these down as you need.

Putting a Tusq nut in my 51...do I need a curved or flat bottom fender style nut? One poster says flat but I'd like to verify before purchase. Thanks!!!

Great idea...I just got a GFS pick-up for my '51, but I'm a bit confused with the green(+) wire..the original pick-up just had red and white, so, did you tape off the red and white of the GFS pick-up or split those and if so..where did the green wire go? Sorry, these may be novice questions, but this is my first wiring attempt and I couldn't find this info anywhere.

I ordered the volume mod for my Squier '51 from crazyparts as you had recommended several months ago and have not received it.

Do you know if they are still in business? Are they legitimate?

Hi Robert, excelent site you have here, i was wondering, which bridge did you install? was this one? (http://yhst-50206111187217.stores.yahoo.net/msttebrvisac.html) , i have a Squier Standard Telecaster, am very happy with my guitar, i have made a few improvements, i change the stock tunning machines with Shaller Locking Tuners because i had a mayor tunning problem, the problem got solved with the new tuners, and also change the electronics inside the guitar.

the truth is that i still not happy with the bridge, particularly with the saddles, i don't know if it's better to change only the saddles or all the bridge, the guitar comes with a Gotoh type bridge, the one that's like the Fender American Standard stock bridge (i suppose you already know that!). what do you recommend?. Do you recomend the bridge i mentioned before?

Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.

Hi Robert, i have the perfect solution for your Roll-off-Volume-Pot-Tapering Problem on your Squier 51. Do not use the 250Kohm-Pot - with this you will loose much of the highs! I threw in a "Volume-Mod". This is simply a 220K resistor in parallel with a 471pf capacitator. This cap preserve high end frequencies and improve the taper when rolling back your volume-pot. It´s soldered between the first and second lug (the 2 open lugs) of the volume-pot. Now when i roll off the vol-pot, at first the overdrive, then the volume and then the highs roll off - PERFECT!!! You will love it! You can order it an crazyparts.de - I also installed new pickups from David Barfuss. A "Fandango" (Humbucker-splittable) and a "63" (SingleCoil). Both are Alnico V with vintage output. They have more sparkling higs and much more detail than the factory ceramics - they´re great! I recommend the Volume mod very much! You have a tone-blend and Volume Pot two-in-one-solution with this mod. It costs about 6 Dollar and is so useable, i think you get it form DiMarzio too, but i´m not sure! Best regards from germany - Tom

Hi Robert, i have a squier 51 and love it too! But there is a thing that i feel that i must change: I think the basswoodbody don´t bring - together with the cheap ceramic pus - enough highs for a strat-like spank sound. To come closer to a Tele or Strat sound in the sinlge coil modes i think i have to change the pus for good alnico V types, to get more quackier highs. The original neck of my ´51 felt good, but i changed it to a Tele Baja FAT V neck, and i must say that the improvement in tone was incedible! Now, after reading your comments about the GTS bridge, i want to change it too... Can you explain a little more detailed, what the GTS bridge does with the tone? i will change the pus and will tell you later, what have changed... Best regards from germany - Tom P.S. You´re a great player Robert!

from stew mac brand new never used until now and i am Going to put a single EMG selesct in the neck
by the way Can anyone tell me If the Gotoh tuners from warmoth will fit in the tuner holes Of the squier neck without modding the tuner holes ?

QKR133, I just use some sand paper to grind down the Tusq nuts until they get the right height. I have a couple that are slightly wider, but that didn't matter much to me. You can file them off too if you need to (before you glue the nut in place).

i just got me a blank fender replacement bone nut - the first time i ever attempt to replace a guitar nut. so i manage to remove the white plastic nut. ok so it is a lot longer the bone nut,but i find the replacement nut curve but the ori is more like flat?? so what'd suggest?

the resend why the nut did'ent fit is beause the neck on the 51 is not as wide as a strat. it's because of the hummbucker pickup is not as wide as a fender single coil. That's why the single coil is at a angle. Hay pedro david gilmor play;s emg.dg20,pickups.I got a two tone 51 been playing 35 year's I like it the way it is.

for your pot, you probably want a 250K audio taper pot. a 250K is classically stock on strats. they roll off the highs earlier than 500K. GFS sells good pots, though they turn a little too easily.

Pedro, I could be wrong, but I suspect David Gilmour would have vintage gain single coil pickups. I prefer vintage-style, low output single coils myself.

Hi Patrick, no, I use the stock pickups. It's hard to give recommendations about pickups. It's a very subjective thing. I would recommend Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio, but there are many good pickup manufacturers out there. Lindy Fralin, Kinman, Suhr, Bill Lawrence, etc.

Hi Robert,

Did you change your pickups on your Squier 51?
What are your recommendations that can be fitted on my Squier 51?
Thank you.
