I was browsing through the members list this morning and noticed that there are many members with 0 posts that have a web site indicated.  In checking some of the web sites, most appear to be spam type advertising – many in foreign languages and some inappropriate.  I would guess the members list is being spammed and there are not nearly 477 (or 517 as of this morning) real members.   :(

Yeah, that's a big problem now. I'm a webmaster at a graphics/desktop customization website and we get a lot of members that join just to post links to spam/warez, etc. It's a job keeping them under control.

I saw an email that Robert was planning an upgrade to a new forum version in mid January.  Would that help screen things?  He is also seeking some financial support to help fund the upgrade. :)

I never thought about spammers.  I guess that's why they use those codes when you create logins.  What a shame though.

I have names on other forums but don't post too much-just here and 1 other-some sites are just too negative so i don't bother with them anymore.

Hey, I can dig it! "They" ignore me in the "other" ones so I don't bother. Primos I guess.

I really prefer this forum.  Down to earth and friendly.  Not a lot of heads butt here...

I like it this way when they get too big you start getting the spam members just there to post a link to something they are selling ....etc >:(

I don't have a clue to what most of the stuff is that they are selling ! It is getting a bit full on though.

Right now there are about 20 posts from someone named "rubingibson" selling things like cialis and other things I never heard of either.  I noticed a similar situation about a week ago.  I assume Robert will delete these shortly too.

Reminds me of an article I read recently entitled "Why do People Create Computer Viruses?"  The short answer, according to this article is:
  • To take control of a computer and use it for specific tasks
  • To generate money
  • To steal sensitive information (credit card numbers, passwords, personal details, data etc.)
  • To prove a point, to prove it can be done, to prove ones skill or for revenge purposes
  • To cripple a computer or network
I assume the reasons for posting spam here are similar.  I put it in the same category as graffiti, vandalism and unwanted solicitations.  If you have something nice, some jerk is going to try to take it away and if he can't do that at least ruin it for you. >:(  Sorry this post is turning out to be an editorial.  It didn't start out that way.

In this case, its probably just stupid advertising phising scams.
