Ibanez TSA15H
« on: December 26, 2010, 06:35:30 PM »
I've had the TSA15H amp head for a couple months now and I like it a lot. Anyone else have one, or played one at length?

Playing through a 1X12 cab w/ a Celestion seventy/80 it sounds great both on the clean and tubescreamer channels with and without the boost on. I ordered a new cab which is a Lopo line vertical slant with one V30 and the other a G12H. It should arrive in around a week.

The amp is quite loud even in the triode mode, but more so in pentode mode.

I still haven't found the perfect amp and I keep searching. This amp sounds a bit "dry" since it has no reverb. I fixed that with an inexpensive Behringer DR400 (Rvb w/ delay) run through the effects loop. I don't know yet if the 6db boost will be enough for increasing the volume for soloing as I have not yet used it with a band. If it doesn't, I'll use my Seymour Duncan twin tube drive pedal. I've already tried the pedal and amp together and the amp takes to pedals well.

I'd like to read what others think of this amp.

The demos I've listened to sound good. My only concern would be overall volume and clean headroom for a band with a drummer. How loud is this amp really?

I am not familiar with this amp.  It looks like a very cool idea, I must admit!

Clean headroom is great! On the clean channel, even playing in the triode mode with the volume at 3:00 o'clock, there is only very slight "blusey" breakup and on the pentode mode it stays clean more so. I have no concerns about the overall volume playing in a band and mic'd to the PA (which is the way we always play regardless). My only volume concern is regarding the "boost". It is +6db and I wonder if it will be loud enough for the leads to cut the mix. Mid Jan our new band will begin rehearsal and I'll be better able to tell then. If it doesn't, I'll use a boost pedal.

Don't be concerned about overall volume. I have to keep the vol on the guitar around 4-5 or it's too loud!

It is a cool amp and especially so at the price.

Wow, sounds like a good deal. I'd love to hear some from you're band with this amp.

A friend of mine made me a custom amp with a tube driven overdrive.  The idea is very close to what Ibanez has done here with placing a tubescreamer circuit in the mix.  Wonder if it can be modded like the old tube screamers.  Not a bad price either at $299.

Don't know about modding, but if the circuitry is identical as stated, can't imagine why not. For me however, the stock version is quite satisfactory.

Now for the price: yes, it is sold at all the large on-line stores for $299, but for non-factory sealed is $269, and if you can find one in the "scratch and dent" category it's $225. AMS is the only on-line store that I deal with that offers the full factory warranty on either the non-factory sealed or "scratch and dent". So, I got mine for $225 with the full 5 yr. factory warranty and, I was unable to find the blemish. I think it's quite a value!

Yesterday, my new speaker cab arrived from http://www.lopoline.com/catalog/item/4254823/6931490.htm Another great deal due to their once a yr. 'Black Friday' sale with 30% off. Got this cab for $330 (normally $475) plus shipping. Celestion V30 and G12H30 are great sounding, quality speakers and go for around $145-$149 each at the on-line discount music stores. The 112 speaker cab I've been previously using has a Celestion Seventy80 speaker which sounds very good, too, but not quite the quality of the V30 nor the G12H.

Only thing I didn't do quite right was I ordered the Lopocab in white tolex thinking it matched the TSA15H when in fact the TSA is off-white or cream. Vanilla would probably have been a better match, but as it is, it doesn't look bad. And of course, the new 212 vertical slant cab can be used with any other head I may decide to buy.

A problem developed with the TSA15H this weekend. When I went to shut down, the "feel" of the standby switch was not normal, so I though I'd lube/clean it with Radio Shack's electronic contact cleaner/lube. When I went to move the switch up and down, it locked up in the standby mode. What a bummer...not a major defect, but one that takes it out of service. Tomorrow I must take it to the repair cntr. for warranty service.

Hope this is an isolated incident to an otherwise great amp.

Switches and pots wear out quickly.  Easy to fix yourself, but if its under warrenty, you're better off letting the pro's do it.  I would however insist on Switchcraft parts.....

I second that...and Switchcraft parts have a nice solid feel.

I've also noticed at the Winter Namm show of 2010, Digitech has decided to get into the amp business too.  I believe its a Tube/valve amp as well.
