I first picked up the guitar when I was 14. Learned a few chords from a Mel Bay book, but didn’t know any songs. My step dad showed me shuffle pattern and the minor pentatonic scale, but never how to use any of it. Never learned theory or the I, IV, V. Since I didn't have the ear for music and didn't have a lot of experience with gear, I rarely played, sometimes going years without playing. Fast forward to about three years ago, I discovered YouTube. Now I really started playing real songs, beginning to end. Started off with AC/DC, Green Day, 3 Doors Down, then on to Skynard and Zeppelin. Then I discovered SRV and Buddy Guy, that’s when I realized I really do love playing the blues. So since then I’ve been learning how to use scales, positions, 7th & 9th chords, keys, fills, lead riffs...etc. Now I'm in a band. I have a long way to go to becoming a lead guitarist, but I can handle a strong rhythm guitar. Sometimes you see those kids in bands today playing all the songs I love to learn, but I have to realize I haven't the time like they do to play 6 hours a day, seven days a week. I am not able to be constantly plugged into YouTube and free online guitar tabs. So if it takes me a few years more to become decent enough of a musician, so be it. While I earn a living, I won't be like them and live of their parents because they discovered too late that not everyone becomes a millionaire rock star. Ya, I gave up, but I realized, I love the music, even more so when I’m the one making it.
