Bought a new amp today
« on: January 08, 2011, 07:21:44 PM »
I have been shopping for a new home practice amp for some time now.  I have been reading reviews, checking out YouTube demos etc., looking for the perfect amp.  I was in a neighboring town today and stopped by a small music store and saw a Fender Super Champ XD on sale for $50 less than I had seen anywhere else including on-line.  I asked the guy in the store what the story was.  He said it was a brand new amp, but Fender was changing their policies on small dealers like him, making it very difficult for him, so he was selling out all his stock and dropping the Fender line.  I guess if you consider a small shop like this one which probably sells a hand full of Fender amps compared to the on-line and mega-stores which sell hundreds if not thousands, Fender can't waste much time on him.  Too bad for him and too bad for the consumer.  It is nice to have a small local store where you can try something out, ask questions and feel comfortable doing it.  I have tried the mega-stores but I don't fit in there.  Anyway, I digress . . . . . . . I bought the amp. ;)

You're going to love that amp.  I had one and deeply regret ever getting rid of it.  It had so much tone to it, sounded great no matter what guitar I had plugged into it.  Congrats, you'll be very happy with it.

Congrats! Great amp, I had one (SCXD) that my son commandeered from me, leaving me with my VCXD, only to have a older fellow I know talk me out of THAT one with a Custom Vibrolux Reverb! Am I complaining...... NO! I plan on getting a Deluxe Reverb RI in trade though. Life can be sweet at times.

Hey Joe,
A friend of mine has a FM212 (100 watt) and I think it has a very good sound. It's been reliable too. He liked it so well that he bought a second one and when he plays with the band, he puts one on one side of the stage away from where he stands and the other behind him. He runs the effects send from the first amp to the second...can't remember if he puts it in the input or effect loop return.

He uses a number of pedals in the guitar input chain and plays guitars with humbuckers. You should "pull the trigger" after all Fender has a 5 yr. warranty and this amp is one of their largest selling solid state amps. Go for it.

And I've used that amp to push a 4x12 cab.  Wow, did that ever sound awesome.  I would suggest a larger cabinet for it.  A friend made me a 1x12 cab for it, but that only brought up the only issue I had with the amp.  The second output jack is more of an effects output to a mixer than to push another speaker.  So to use an extension cabinet, you have to disconnect the internal speaker.

I'm pretty sure he used to effects return, that way one preamp powered two power amps. If he used the front end (which he could) you'd be running a preamp into another preamp.

Anyway, I've read lots of good things about SCXD, you can't go wrong with it.

The most I've ever heard about modifications is a simple speaker swap.  Bill M attempted to beef up this amp, but found nothing he did ever really made a difference other than a better speaker....  I found another SCXD whose cabinet was broken upon arival.  I was going to have a friend make a whole new cab for it in a custom wood fabrication with a larger speaker housing for either a 12" or 15" speaker... That would of been awesome!   But the amp was sold when I went back for it.  Someone must of had the same idea....
