Fender Mustang Amps
« on: February 10, 2011, 03:02:23 PM »
Fender introduced the Mustang I (20 Watt 1x8), Mustang II (40 watt 1x12), and Mustang III (100 watt 1x12).  At Winter NAMM the Mustang IV (150 watt 2x12) and Mustang V (150 Watt Head) and 4x12 Cab.  I've heard many people reviewing this online and one guy (Rob Chappers from the UK) did a best modeling amp comparison.  He tested Mustang II, Line 6 Spider 30, VOX VT30, and the Roland Cube 20XL.  Other than the Roland besting the Mustang in high gain (metal) settings, the Mustang beat all the competition in regards to looks, tone, weight, features, and cost.  So I decided to try a Mustang II today.  I used a Gibson Les Paul Faded (Burstbucker Pro's sound awesome).  I must say it was a great sounding amp at low and higer volumes.  I was impressed with its clean and crunch tones.  (I don't play metal, so I didn't push the high gain stuff).  For the money ($99 to $499 US), I think its a great practice amp.  I'd recommend it to anyone, but don't take my word for it.  Wait until Robert demo's one or more for us to listen to.

I've got the Mustang I and couldn't be happier with it. It can dial in many different tones and they are tons better than the sounds I was getting from an old Digitech RP-50.

For about $100.00 they are a whole lot of fun.

This guy whose guitars I work on, refers to those Mustang amps as "fake" amps. I told him (laughing) "I guess that means you don't like em, huh". He's on the old fashioned side, so I understand. Me, well I've got too many as it is (amps), not to mention other gear, so I may never try one out personally. To me like anything else, if it's what YOU want, it's good!

For what they cost, an amp is an amp.  Now I love my tube amps, but there isn't a tube amp out there that can achieve the Mustangs tones at low volume.

Has anybody checked out the 150w head version with the matching 4x12 cab? Well, looks like now there's a choice of the Mustang 1 (20w 1x8" combo), Mustang 2 (40w 1x10" combo), Mustang 3 (100w 1x12" combo), Mustang 4 (150w 2x12"combo), and finally the Mustang 5HD w/matching 4x12" cab I mentioned earlier in this post. Something must be going right.

From what I'm reading on the forums, dealers can't hardly keep them in stock they're moving out the door so fast.

A co-worker here bought a used mid 90's mexistrat for $250 and the Mustang I.  He's a real noob with the guitar, but I think I led him in the right direction to get the most of learning how to play.  (Not to mention pointing him to Dolphin street.com!)

I've always been a tube amp snob but I have to admit, Rob Chapman and other demos have warmed me to these amps. They sound fantastic over youtube. For practice amps, bedroom or small band applications I imagine they rock and seem such great deals for the money.
