Blues (backing from one of Robert's tracks)
« on: September 16, 2011, 03:27:28 PM »
took the afternoon and messed with 'tone'.  first is a Squier strat into a Blues Jr.:

next is a Steinberg Synapse into a THD Univalve:

foolishly enough, i did not have the auto limiter on for the second track, so don't put on your headphones and leave the volume at max when you start it.

zoom H1, in my living room, with a Boss Dynadrive and Miss Scarlett with a candlestick.

The Squier strat into a Blues Jr. - that works really well - nice licks - and I see (unlike me) you know how to do chordy bits! Sung with conviction too.  :)

It's a good BT with a lot of character to play against of course which encourages some good lead lines.

You'll have to pardon my ignorance - I've not met the Steinberg Synapse before. I've just had a bried look on-line and it all seems very high tech - but nice natural Blues sounds you've got from it. Thanks for the warning about the absence of the auto limiter!!  ;D

Ah-ha - 'Messed with tone' - that's a never ending pastime.

thanks, VB!

i didn't realize until far after i had put the Steinberg down...it had NO BATTERY in it...:)  it has active EMG pickups. i had no idea it would even 'produce a signal' until yesterday.  i may have to put a battery in it, and see what it will do again in the THD. the EMGs are hot signalwise (when they have a battery pushing them)..but people complain that they have no character. i don't think that's true...it depends on input, i think.

when i found a Steinberg that was within my price range, i snatched it up. i've had it perhaps 6 years now. it is the only guitar i can put in the toolbox on the truck (only one that will fit) in hot weather, then take it out and it's only a few cents off in tune. pretty amazing to me. the odd things about it are the stringing, the tuners (40 to 1 ratio)...well...it's just an odd guitar. it's 'headless'. i should play it more. it has a non-traditional feel to it, but isn't as far off road as the earlier Steinbergs were.

Good listening! If I jammed to that, it'd be instrumental for sure.

Nice playing, reb!

And I like the vocals you've added; not only the lyrics but the voicing is nice and bluesy.

Take away their autotune and I'd bet you don't sound much different and probably better than some of those currently with record deals.

both great tracks, but I rather enjoyed the first track.  The 2nd track needs too much editing/trimming on the bass tones and leveling the vocals to really be heard right.

pic, that's a great compliment! really....as i keep on 'trying things', i seem to get a little more 'locked in', and find i can make up lyrics as i go along. this was maybe the third time through on that tune, with the lyrics pretty much finalized in my mind.

DB, i think that some of that was the lack of battery in the Steinberger. i was fighting with it the whole way through trying to figure out why it had no bottom, and no pick attack dynamics.  kind of shocked me to find it would even make a signal with no battery...but...there is no editing here. the zoom h1 is a 'get it right, or forget it' proposition; it records in stereo, but all the sounds are locked into the two stereo tracks. so, i don't slow down for mistakes....when i get even close, i call it a 'take'. i suppose if i diddled around, i might find a way to push it usb into audacity, but that kind of ruins the spontaneity. i call what i do 'spontaneous disgustion' :)

when i go get some more stuff, i have a x track recorder. i'm going to bring it over here, and see if i can figure out how to use it. then we'll hear some really strange wailing....the manual is written by a dyslexic blind chinese person.

my gosh! this recording is as rough as ol' sally was!  who says a squier strat won't squawk like an american standard?

many thanks, robert!

dh, that was a composite of 'two xgf's'.  they say you have to live the blues to sing it...maybe i didn't realize i was living it so much :)  well, yeah...looking back, women have put me through some changes....
