Back in the day!
« on: October 15, 2011, 10:48:30 PM »
Does any of you guys remember these? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7SOrOuJb_c  The vid is about the Teisco Checkmate 100 all tube amp Circa 1966, however I've seen an ad this weekend in CL is selling a Teisco Checkmate 50 all tube amp w/matching cab, and man is that thing clean! I think they started converting these to solid state around late '67 or early '68. I had a solid state 20 watt Teisco combo w/ two tens. It was "all that" but what did I know. All I did know was it was better than the previous no name amp I had.

I was tempted, but dude was asking $1600, which is probably worth it 'cause it's rare and  the thing looked like it was off the showroom floor so to speak. No rips or stuff like that. That's just an example of the stuff I'd like to collect for nostalgic reasons but I don't have the room. I have too many amps as it is. The magnificent seven (amps) is enough for me and I'm thinkin' about trimmin' that down soon.

The Magnificent seven are seven amps I currently own. Actually six 'cause I gave the Fender Frontman 25R (PR498) away to my nephew recently.

1) An Allen Amps Chihuahua 1x10  10 watt combo
2)Peavey Backstage Chorus 208  25 watt combo
3)Fender Deluxe Reverb RI  22 watt combo
4)Mesa Boogie Express 5:25
5)Mack Amps Skyraider head 15 watt w/ 1 x 12 cab made by http://mathercab.com/
6)Swart Spacetone Atomic Jr. 5 watt

Got a good deal on number one 'cause the guy I got it from, bought it in kit form and gave up on the thing. I think he paid 699 for it. I got it for 260, and finished it.

Got a better deal on number two 'cause it was free. The guy owed me for practice time. (I used to run a band practice facility)

Got number three in a trade..... I traded a Vibrolux Reverb for it. (You won't believe how I got that!)

Number four....... traded PA equipment for it.

Numbers five and six were purchased new.

And there you have it. All of those are my personal amps and I really don't need all that. I just finally got rid of a rack of gear that was left unclaimed by their owners. Like the 122 Leslie I sold this past summer. SS amps (ie, Peavey Renoun, Roland Jazz Chorus 77, among other stuff) mike stands, mics, drum hardware, etc.

I remember how you got the Vibrolux.  That was a sweet deal too!  Running a practice facility sounds cool if you get to keep all the unclaimed gear!  Probably helps support the G.A.S. when it strikes you!

I'd like to get back into it, but unfortunately lack of demand and higher rents (what forced me out in the first place) make it hard to stay afloat. But, who knows?

I almost started one a year ago.  Thought there'd be a big business for it as there are so many bands out there and so few places to practice at.  Maybe its a good thing I didn't...

Yeah, if you don't feel like you're ready to take the plunge, I do not recommend it. It is a leap of faith that's not worth the risk if you don't have any backing. By the way guys, here's that CL ad I was tellin' you about; http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/msg/2656089468.html

I have a feeling it'll be around for awhile

Yep, he's dreaming.... No one will pay that much for tha amp.  If its not a modern name brand people are familiar with, its not going to sell.  I've seen '60s Deluxe Reverbs, Twins, and Super Reverbs sell for less than that around here...
