funny but not so funny noise

My SCXD makes what sounds like a sympathetic note an octave lower whenever I play a E.  Tube related?

I had a SCXD and that never happened.  Does it happen on all the "voicings" on the 2nd channel or the clean channel?  What effects did you have turned on or what pedals did you use?

Hey Sven! I haven't personally encountered any such experience with the SCXD. Even though my son currently has mine and he's lovin' it. Try changing the 12AX7 tube. By the way, it is not a pre-amp tube. The first half provides the additional tube gain for both channels and acts as an interface between the solid state circuitry and the tube circuitry. The second half is a phase inverter.

Both channels.  Didn't check all voicings.  good idea.  No pedals.  No effects.

I have a few 12ax7s laying around.  I'll try swapping it out.  I also have a set of JJ 6v6s in my HRD I can try, but I don't know about biasing this thing so I'm hesitant.

Try the tubes and if possible, try swapping the speaker.  If none of that works, I hope you have a fender warrenty.  I got rid of my SCXD for one reason.  Its a PCB board amp that cannot be fixed if it fails.  I now have a Jet City 2112RC combo which is a point to point amp that does not contain any PCB electronics.  I lost all the cool effects and voicings, but I can live with the piece of mind knowing I can fix this amp down the road.

It might be a "design by Soldano" amp, but the (Made in China) Jet City JCA2112RC amp ain't hardly point to point.

I've looked into that mod.  The guy has it posted on Ebay.  Since I did notice the headroom problem, I've also considered a treble bleed on my strat so the gain drops but not the volume on the guitar...

That's probably the main reason I never got one of those amps. I guess it was primarily designed with rockers in mind. I passed on a Marshall Class 5 for the same reason. Got rid of a Crate V18-212 and a Peavey Windsor Studio combo for the same reason. Lack of clean headroom. It gets frustrating when you play clean most of the time. Imagine my shock and horror when I turn the knob to 3, and it starts to breaking up. Arghh! :o

I briefly had a Peavey ValveKing 1x12.  It sounded great, cool clean tones, everything I wanted.  That was until two hours after playing it, it went through the V1 tubes like they were going out of style.  I had a Bugera V22 that sounded great until it started to overheat and drop the reverb.... I've heard Orange amps are great because you get the clean of a fender and the crunch of a Mesa...

Y'know, I had a guy tell me the same thing about the ValveKing. Then on top of that, another guy tells me the same thing about his V22! I don't even know why I considered either one when I have a multitude of amps as it is! I'm fighting the GAS thing.

I'd avoid both the valveking and v22 as I had both in the past month, one was used (Peavey) and the Bugera was new.  Both crapped out on me and I would recommend them.  Now my Jet City has many positive reviews.  No one has had a reliablity issue with the amps.  I do know my Jet City was cheaper than both the amps and the quality is better.  The valveking was a 50 watt amp, but that really doesn't matter now.  I honestly don't think you can go wrong with the jet city.  I just spent two more hours tweaking on it until I think I finally found the sweet spot.  I can keep the gain and volume controls on the amp alone and just use my guitar volume to clean it up.  I tried using a homemade clone boost pedal a friend let me borrow, but it wasn't working right.  So for the budget friendly tube amp goes, this is a great choice.  Of course I also had a Fender Superchamp XD which I think is a great amp too.  The speaker isn't so great, I ran mine into an extension cabinet and that livened it up.  That is a 15W tube hybrid amp which is also worth looking into for about the same price as the Jet City....($289 and $299)

I'm going to allow history to repeat itself.  I'm going back to another Peavey Valveking 112 combo.  It has such killer tone, I can't pass it by again.  Warrenty will come with this one, but lucky for me I have a standby amp just in case it needs to be shipped off for repair!
