No More Loot
« on: December 17, 2011, 01:22:39 PM »
Just had over a fortnight without playing one decent note so happy to have managed this. I've been getting grumpier by the day without my musical fix. It's really annoying how I can go from a decent spell of musical avtivity to rock bottom zero overnight.

Still trying to crack the problem of using Boost / Overdrive without a lot of compression / loss of playing dynamics / loss of guitars own sound. Slowly getting there - maybe. Or am I?  :-\

Blues in A - improv on backing track from jammer.net.ru. OD pedal (first full day with it) inserted in send/return on Vox Tonelab LE. PRS SE P90s. No delay - only amp and cab sims and a little reverb on the Tonelab. No tweaking on the DAW.

Wow, sounds great.  What's the purpose of the OD pedal in conjuction with the Tonelab?

Thanks DB.  :)

I'll admit the Tonelab has its own built in OD fx ..... they work OK enough for heavier layers of overdrive/distortion but if used at the cleaner end of the range they're inclined to compress and colour the tone/sound of the guitar much more than I would like. As do the couple of budget OD pedals I have.

I have just recently managed to acquire a Rothwell Heartbreaker OD pedal which was up for sale locally. Yesterday was the first day I got to try it out properly. I can hear the lack of compression using the Heartbreaker, and it's confirmed on the spikiness of the Wave forms on my DAW tracks - I really prefer the sounds of a recording when as much of the playing dynamics and the adjustments to tone and volume controls of the guitar come through on to the mix - apart from anything else it means less work for me on trying to get those variations.

And linking in a pedal as good as this using the lower gain / boost elements adds a significant richness and fullness to the sound while letting the sound of the guitar itself through. I've never liked the way my budget OD pedals have tried to make all my guitars sound the same.

Ideally I should be gettng the sound I'm looking for by putting a microphone on a cranked up tube amp - but with two sets of neighbours it's not really an option. So I'm trying to get modelling software and pedals to do as good a job as my poor skills will let them. It's VERY frustrating.

VB, you might want to pose a question over at the gear page.  surely someone there will know which box will do what it is you wish.  a word of caution though -
those guys can be abrasive at times. don't take it personal. 90% of the folks there are pretty helpful.

Thanks for the heads up on the gear page DH. I hadn't seen that one before. Though, heeding your warning, I'll maybe have a good long look around at existing posts first before I make a total fool of myself there.  ;D

The way all the parts of your gear interact with each other can get quite complex and mind boggling. I'm not tbh totally sure exactly what i want either, other than the ability to have a set up that allows the dynamics of playing and tone of the guitar to get through while with harder picking and tweaked up volume I'm also able to get a good gritty blues sound that is still musical enough that I don't clench my teeth. I maybe need a set up that has an A-B facility with clean and gritty sides of the playing dealt with seperately.  :-\

Mentioning complex and mind boggling I've just seena schematic of Eric Johnsons set up - http://www.ericjohnson.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9&Itemid=8 Hmmm ... apart from going cross eyed trying to trace all the wires - I think bankruptcy would follow on getting that set up!  :o
