Jet City Amplification
« on: November 15, 2010, 10:36:24 AM »
G'day Folks!

Recently, I had a thread going on my Bugera V22 tube amp.  As that amp began to give me heartache, I ordered a Jet City 20watt 1x12 combo (JCA2112RC) to replace it.  I received the amp on Friday and there is some fantastic tones coming from this amp.  I can get a slightly gritty clean (I know what you're thinking gritty but clean? I'll explain in a second.) to a heavily overdriven tone from this amp.  There is not a lot of clean headroom because the preamp/gain volume must be up around 1 for the amp to produce sound.  Its truely a preamp stage control.  Controls go up to 9, but I couldn't get the master volume past 4 or 5 when my ears couldn't take it anymore (preamp was maxed out).

Its a simple, but effective amp.  5 12AX7's (two for Reverb) and 2 EL84's.
The control panel is laid out like this:
-Input; -Preamp/Gain volume; -Reverb (tube driven!); -Bass; -Mid; -Treble; -Master volume; -Presence.
Then its standby and on/off switch.  Very simple to control and it is based upon a Soldano Atomic 16 amp. (It was designed by Mike Soldano who is also part owner of the company).  All this and I paid $288 out the door for it.

Has anyone else tried this amp?  What do you think?  Its supposedly mod friendly, but I don't think I need to go there... yet...

As luck would have it, the reverb on this amp is really weak.  Good news, according to the nice folks at Jet City told me, was the tubes for the reverb need to be positioned back in place.  They have a tendency to rattle loose sometimes.  I sure hope this won't be a problem in the future...

Looks like I will be getting a Jet City head and cab soon... ;)
I'm making a trade with a friend. I think I get the better end of the deal...

I couldn't agree with you more.. Except for the new amp head I got yesterday.  Finally plugged it in tonight and wow!  More to come on that one.

Fiddled with the reverb tubes last night.  Seems to be all better.  I must of shook one loose.

Man I simply love these amps, I'm wanting the 50w one myself. Great sounds, great prices, all tube, what more could you want?

Can't ask for much more.  I'm looking forward to buying a leslie like pedal or an A/B switch because I have a similiar amp that has more clean head room to mix in with this one.

A nice dejavibe would be my choice. Are you looking for a Robin Trower style sound? If you are, he has a few interviews on youtube where he talks about his current rig, which sounds amazingly like his old rig ;)

I'm not sure what I'm looking for other than just something different.

As much as I like the tone and looks of this amp, back it goes.  I'm going back to a Peavy VK112.  I hope I don't regret it!

I do love the amp, but I tried to get more clean headroom out of it by changing the V2 tube to a 12AXT, but its still not loud enough to cut through on a live situation.  I wish I could keep both, but the Valveking has a great clean channel, footswitchable, and is 50 Watts....

I used the Valveking last night for three hours at a rehersal.  The amp held its own, remained clear, and sounded great overall.  No compliants on this one!  We'll see after Saturday's Gig!  (My first!)
