Accoustic Guitar Strings
« on: January 18, 2012, 01:07:53 AM »
Hi...

I have a pretty cheap accoustic guitar from Kirkland (made in China) and replaced the original strings (already looked a bit rusty) with much thicker strings from martin guitars.

Afterwards the guitar sounded better but it was hard to adjust and barre chords were hard to play.

A week ago I ordered these strings: "Gibson Gear Masterbuilt Premium 10-47"

They are really great sounding and really enhance the sound of that cheap guitar - also the playability improved a lot.

I can really recommend these strings.

My favorite strings are Cleartones for acoustics.  They last 4x times longer or more than normal strings.  But they don't alter the tone of the guitar, however they do make the guitar sound louder.  Recently, Martin Strings started to team up with Cleartone and use their coating formula on their strings.  Thankfully, the Martin strings are a couple dollars cheaper than Cleartones which are about $15 US a set.

Those Gibson strings you are using are rather thin for an acoustic, my electrics aren't even that thin.  On acoustics (since I rarely do an bending), I use 12's.

i use those thin strings because I had problems with the really thick martin strings i bought before. It was hard to tune the guitar right because the strings were too thick for the nut. I have thicker strings on my les paul tho... and even more thicker on my hagstrom viking...

Typically acoustics are meant for thicker strings.... That is odd yours is meant for such a light gauge.  Sometimes the lower priced guitars like that are using parts from electrics (such as the nut) or the guitar isn't strong enough to handle the tension of thicker strings.  I found my old Ibanez cannot go past 11's or the strings start to bind.

Ithink i have to rasp the nut so thicker strings would fit...
