another thing you might consider, if you're on a budget, is your local freeecycle.  google it. i've used it here and gave/got some good items.  furniture, computer parts, appliances, i've seen people give away running cars.  i gave away several computers, and lots of parts.

Thanks dh and reb for the thoughts and ideas on the computers. Good link on the XP downgrade.  :)

I used (when I was younger and more energetic) to be quite keen on messing around with computers, but somehow the Thrill Has Gone now. I've sort of stagnated where I am - I think with getting it working to the extent I'm OK with the recording process I'm reluctant to change anything for fear of making things worse.  ::)

I will admit though - if I get problems with this machine I'll be keener on moving to an XP than a Win7 o/s.
