The bright orange Digitech Hot Head is a powerful distortion pedal. It has quite a large amount of high gain, and doesn't sound like an overdrive pedal. Instead, it can be a little fizzy and over the top, so be careful with the gain knob. It can make a clean amp sound like a bunch of Marshalls on full tilt, if you turn up the gain. It can also sound quite nice with the gain set lower, which is my preference with this pedal. The sound I think of when I hear this pedal is the 80s high gain Marshalls that were so popular back then.
If you keep the gain quite low, you get a nice organic distortion. With some guitars it can sound a bit bright, but use your eq on your amp to taste. It's certainly possible to get a good rock guitar tone with the Hot Head.
This pedal is wilder than my other OD's. On this clip, the gain was set at 1 or 2 o'clock, and with a lower setting you get a smoother tone. It cleans up and gives you a nice bluesy tone if you roll down the volume knob on your guitar a bit.
