Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz Review

The Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz is a wacky toy. It can produce some very cool tones. It has modified circuitry that adds an octave overtone to the basic fuzz tone. The result is a unique fuzz tone that is similar to what Jimi Hendrix used on many of his solos.

A fun efffect to play with, it does an octavier type of effect together with a fuzz. It is a really weird pedal, but it is cool to use occasionally. It's supposed to mimick Jimi Hendrix sound, but I don't think it's quite that close. Jimi could play chords with his octavier sound, but the Dunlop Octave Fuzz works best for single-note playing.

One thing that would make this pedal better is a switchable octavier effect. The fuzz tone in this pedal is fun to play with, but since the octavier effect is always on, you are limited to these far out fuzz octave tones. That is of course fun in itself, but a pedal like the Octa-Fuzz by Fulltone would be more versatile, since it allows you to switch the between octa-fuzz and just fuzz.

I like the use my Wah with this pedal. By putting the Wah after the Octave Fuzz, you can get some screaming wicked tones. I never tried this combination until I heard Eric Gales - I noticed he was using an octavier effect and then he would suddenly kick in the Wah. Sounds great! You gotta try it if you havent.

Summary

The Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz is a fun pedal for single note playing. You can get some really cool sounds out of it, but it is a one-trick pony. If you use it sparingly and wisely, you can have a blast with it. I like it, but I don't use it that much since the effect it produces isn't often that usable in a cover band (unless you play a lot of Hendrix!). Fun toy, regardless, and you can find these relatively inexpensive on eBay.

The Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz has been discontinued.

Players such as Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine use of original Blender pedals has elevated these originals to the status of coveted vintage treasures that fetch hundreds of dollars when they can be found. This reissue is intended to satisfy the demand that has driven the original's price so high. It is made for metal players who want an ultra-aggressive sound that is unique. The Fender Blender Custom is capable of a wide array of sounds that no other octave/fuzz pedal can provide.
