Maxon SD-9 Sonic Distortion Review

The Maxon SD-9 has been around for quite some time - since the early 1980s, I believe. It is a very simple pedal, but it can produce a wide range of tones.

This pedal can be used as a high gain pedal for screaming solos, or you can set it to lower gain plus roll off your volume knob a bit - then you get a fabulous blues tone.

The Maxon SD-9 is used by many top notch players, notably Scott Henderson and Michael Landau, and this pedal has stayed in their set up for years.

Features

This pedal has a gain knob, a tone knob and a volume level knob. Very simple. However, you can create several cool sounds with it. If you turn down the tone knob all the way, you get a TS-9 type of overdrive, except with less midrange hump. Very musical. On the other hand, crank up the tone knob and gain knob, and you get screaming heavy metal-ish tones, but without a fizzy, harsh tone. It still retains a very "pure" tone, if I may call it that. I feel the knobs on this pedal work differently than other distortion pedals I've tried. They do more than what their label says, so be sure to experiment with the knobs if you get one of these pedals.

Sound

Well, one word describes it all: fantabulous! You can get AC/DC sounds just as easily as you get Stevie Ray Vaughan tones. It does not color your tone much either. It enhances your tone, and the truth is my tube amp sounds way better when I'm going through this pedal. My Reverend Hellhound sounds like a handwired Marshall on steroids now! Seriously take a look at this pedal, if you like good guitar tone and you like overdrive and distortion tones. This pedal can do both, and you'll be smiling all the way to work next day... !

It can produce a high gain tone with the tone knob way up. I recommend keeping the volume level knob way up too - it sounds better that way I think.

Sound clips

Here is a video clip I made with the SD-9, using my SX Strat with Fender CS 54 pickups, and I'm using my Reverend Hellhound on the UK setting, and only effect is some Lexicon LXP-1 reverb.
