Running Race Results 1998

My Race Results 1998

December 13, The Santa Shuffle, Edmonton, AB, Canada. This 5.3 k race was held at Hawrelak Park (2 laps around it), and the weather was rather nice. Unfortunately, the road was slippery, and it was hard to run relaxed. I started out as 3rd, and moved up to the leader after the first lap. Then I did a few attempts of increasing the pace, and with about 1k to go, I was alone and could finish with a 6 s win. My time was 17.58. This was my birthday too, so it was a good day for me! I

October 4, Lidingöloppet. After 1.51.28, I finished Lidingöloppet on October 4 as number 74. I ran quite even - 36.30 first 10, 36,35 the second 10, and 38.23 on the last 10. I had hoped to go under 1.50, but I wasn't strong enough this time. This is a killer race, I tell you. 30 k with hills and hills and even more hills. They suck the strenght out of your legs like nothing else. I find that going downhill is the worst, because your legs get beaten up real hard after a while, since the hills are quite steep. The last 10 k is where most people can't keep up their pace, and it is also the hardest part of the race. The last 5 k has some really tough hills.
Anyway, I think I must be content after all; last time I didn't even go under 2 hours...my team mates Ola (1.48.45) and Rikard (1.50.06) did a very good job, and I had no chance of keeping up with them this time. This year, a new course record was set by Kenyan Isaac Chemobo, with 1.33.33. That is one awesome time!

September 19, Sävarået. This is a nice relay from Floda to Sävar. It is mainly on asphalt and has 8 legs. I ran two legs, 7,1 and 7,2 k. I ran lousy, felt like I weighed two hundred kilos. I ran a little better on the second leg, but it wasn't acceptable.
Our team, Team Intersport, ended up 3rd with the total time of 3.25.47. Team Skogsägarna won with the time of 3.16.32, and Svenska Spel på Saedens Tobak 2nd, with 3.20.02.

Leg 4, 7.1 k
23.47 and 3rd, after Peter Ljungholm 22.08 and Mica Comstock 22.08.

Leg 5, 7.2 k
   23.04, after Ljungholm 22.03 and Comstock 22.08.

September 12, Universitetet Runt. Gustav, Peter, me, Ola, and Rikard stayed together the first few kilometers. Ola dropped first, at around 4 k. I felt very good until about 6 k, where I suddenly weakened, and had to slow down. Rikard followed Gustav and Peter some hundred meters more. I was 5-10 seconds behind Rikard, but I saw he was tired to, so I put my mind to it and catched up with him at around 8 k. Then we were together, and I tried to get rid of him with 1 k to go. He seemed to have no trouble following me, so I slowed down and let him take over, until he got into stomach problems and I could pass him and win by less than two seconds. Gustav was strongest today.

September 10, PRK, 3000 m, Gammlia. This was not a very good race, it felt more like training. Me and Rikard pulled 400 each, until 2100 meters, when I increased the speed and won quite easily. Kilometers - 2.57, 3.03, 2.53. The second kilometer ridiculously slow!

  1. Robert Renman IFK Umeå 8.53
  2. Rikard Hedelin IFK Umeå 9.02
  3. Ola Torstensson IFK Umeå 9.08

September 2, 10,000 m District Championships, Skellefteå. New PR! I did my best race ever tonight, 31.35'36 in the DM 10,000 meters in Skellefteå! I am very happy with that, even though P-Å Sandström did as usual - sprinted the last 80 m like a cannonball, giving me no chance of a medal. I finished 4th, but I improved my PR with 47 seconds! The weather was perfect for running, no wind and just the right temperature. The first 5 k in 15.49, the other half in 15,46, with a last kilometer in 2.58 (last 400 m - 66 s). The pace was very even; around 3.10 most of the time. Both Rikard and I did better than we had hoped, and we both look forward to some new shoes! Unfortunately for Ola, he didn't crawl under 32 minutes, although he was close...

August 22, Hörneforsrundan. I finished 2nd in my home town race, Hörneforsrundan! My time wasn't as good as I had hoped, but I must say I am quite content after all. It felt very good to hear people shout my name and cheer for me, especially in the end. For some reason I was extremely tired on the last kilometer and really needed the support I got along the road to keep my 2nd place. The official results can be reached at the home page of Hörneforsrundan.

August 15, Röbäckskneget. Wow, mud, mud and more mud!!! Hereby I solemnly nominate this race to the the dirtiest race ever. I took it easy in the beginning, as I knew there were some deep mud-puddles ahead... but there was no way of keeping one's shoes white.
After 4 k, I caught up on Ola, and we kept company till about 9 k, where I felt very strong and increased my speed significantly. All in all, a good race for me, and I used the opposite tactics compared to my running in Mullsjön Runt.

August 12, PRK 3000 m Skellefteå. Here I got a new PR - which was a somewhat a surprise for me. Well, I knew I could do a good time, but the day prior to this race I was feeling so incredibly tired I could hardly move. I had been training to much and to tough. I nearly stayed home, but in the last minute I decided I should try, otherwise I knew I would be regretful. Good choice. Even though it felt like the warm-up would kill me, I managed to keep a good pace once the race started. With 800 m left to go, Rikard passed me looking very strong. I stayed with him nearly one lap, but on the last one he was too strong for me. Afterwards, Rikard was so exhilarated to be the proud owner of a PR with 9 seconds, that he bought all of us (4 runners) food at MAX!! Thank you Rikard!

August 8, Mullsjön Runt. I like this race - it is cross-country race of 7,5 k. It is one of the smaller races around here, but it is a Grand Prix race so there are usually quite a lot of runners in it. The course is very varied; everything from sand to asfalt and it goes around a lake (Mullsjön).

This time I decided to start optimistic and see how long I could stay with Ludvig (who recently did a 10,000 in 30:20). I had to let go just before 2 k where there was a steep downhill, and then I was alone for the rest of the race (I am lousy at running downhill). Two runners were chasing me 10-15 seconds behind, and even though I got very tired very quickly, I managed to keep them behind.

  2. Robert Renman IFK Umeå 23,41
  3. Ola Torstensson IFK Umeå 23,50

August 1, Norrländska Mästerskapen, Piteå. I got a new PR, but I am not very content. You see, I was fighting for 2nd place, but two runners beat me on the last 150 meters or so. I should have run tougher and pushed harder with 400 left to go. Still, a PR is not bad. My apologies for not knowing the exact times here.

June 13, Umemilen

June 1, Björkstafetten Malux Data (or Vingarna IF) won the relay and did so without too much trouble. I ran the 3rd leg and by that time they increased their lead. I ran quite well on my 2,350 k leg (6,46) but lost some seconds (not surprisingly) to Malux Data's Björn Bergström.
Well, we had a tough fight with the runners from Z-Textil (Skellefteå IF/AIK), but unfortunately we lost it on the last leg.
We ended up 3rd and our second team finished 5th. All our runners did a good job, so we are all quite happy with the day. Just wait until next relay - REVENGE!!!
