Welcome to my running page - here's some updates about my running lately.

Well, Las Vegas Marathon was a great experience. The weather was perfect, no wind and quite cool. I finished in 2:49:11, and I am quite content with that time after all. I ran with my friend David Ball for most of the race, and we were on pace for 2:45 - 2:46, but then on the last 2-3 miles, we both got spaghetti-legs, and we could only shuffle-run from there on. Oh well, we'll train harder next time.
My wife Denise and her friend ran dressed up as Elvis. It was a blast!
This was my first time in Las Vegas, and both Denise and myself enjoyed the trip a lot, not just the marathon. I wouldn't mind running this race again - it was a great course for running a good time - almost completely flat, just a few inclines here and there but nothing that qualifies as a hill.
The day before the marathon, we helped set a new world record for the largest group of Santas running. It was a 5 kilometer race, and it was hilarious to see so many Santa Claus people running! See the pictures below.

2007 ACAC provincial championships - our womens team took home the silver medal, and our men won the GOLD! Excellent performances today! It was amazingly fun to watch the races at Goldstick park.
Training is going really well for me. I've been getting some decent mileage in, and some good fast workouts on the track. I've run a few ACAC cross-country races with good results, and I am probably in better shape than any year since the year 2000. I'm looking forward to Stewart Cup 10 km next weekend, and then Las Vegas marathon on December 2nd. I should be able to beat the 2:51 I ran in Portland two years ago.

Brian Mazza Memorial Run, formerly known as the David Thompson Trail Run
This is a nice trail run around Crimson Lake, about 15 km outside of Rocky Mountain House.
I placed 1st in this race, some 10 seconds ahead of a young guy called Matt from Wetaskiwin. David Ball was 3rd.

ING Edmonton Marathon Weekend - I ran the 10k race. Wait a minute, make that the 11k race... I placed 6th in almost 39 minutes! What a slow time I thought, until I realized everyone else ran 3-4 minutes slower than they usually do. Thanks, Running Room for the course measurement excellence. I was pissed.

The Canadian Death Race is over for this year. What an adventure! Our team, the Go Getters placed 2nd, only a couple of minutes behind the winners, which where the same as last year (not sure about their team name). I ran leg 4; up Mount Hamel and down - a nice little jog of 38 kilometres with an elevation gain of 6,500 feet!
I reach the summit in 1:40, then it was a very long descent, which messed up my hamstrings and IT band. I am more sore now than I can remember I've ever been. And my left knee hurt the whole way down. Oh well. It was an experience, and if I ever do this leg again, I'll practice power-walking some mountains ahead of time. I wasn't fastest on this leg, even though I felt pretty strong at the end, and kept a good pace all the way to the end, or at least that's what I thought. It's hard to judge how fast you're actually going when you run in this kind of terrain. Check out the Canadian Death Race website for more information. Results should be up soon, I hope.

Went down to run the Half Marathon during the Calgary Marathon Weekend and had a terrible race. My legs were not working this day, and after 12 kilometres, my legs were like chicken rubber legs. Some really fast guys showed up for this race, since there were good prize money in it. At least I placed top 20 - haha!
Still had fun at the Stampede grounds, and enjoyed the weekend with the family. Our daughter Karly did fantastically well, running her first 10k race in under 58 minutes. I am so proud of her.

Well, I've been training pretty good for a while. I ran the Red Deer Half in 1:18:44, our team 2run.ca was 4th in the K-100 Relay, and on July 1st, I placed 4th in the Canada Day Road Race, which was shortened to 14k by mistake.
No injuries so far, and I've gotten in some great workouts. A couple of times now I've run 8 x 1000 meters on the track in about 3:17 - 3:18 with 1:30 rest in between. I run the Calgary Marathon next weekend, and our daughter Karly is running the 10k!

I ran the St. Albert 10 Miler yesterday, and it was fun. I had some stomach problems, but it didn't stop me from finishing in 19th place with the time of 59:33. Matt Norminton blew away the course record with a time of 50:46 - insanely fast! I had hoped I would place higher up, but I did what I could and I just have to settle for what I can do right now. Next race is in 2 weeks - Puffin for a Muffin here in Camrose, an 8 km race.

Running is going well! Almost hard to believe, but I am not too badly injured and I am getting in 5 runs per week, including a long run! Yeehaaw! I have been at it quite nicely since January (at least compared to the last few years of winter running), so I am hoping to be in decent shape come summer. My first race might be the St. Albert 10 miler, and then the Red Deer Half. I am looking forward to these early races. I may not run as I hope, but if nothing else, they are good motivators and they should help me get in shape for early summer races.
I bailed out on the Bloomsday race this year, will try again for next year.

Invested in some new shoes. Adidas Boston and Asics Gel Nimbus VII. The Nimbus shoes feel fantastic. Lots of cushioning and soft feel, and it was a joy run in them. The Boston is a shoe I've always liked also.
I have decided to step up my training. My injury situation is quite good - the achilles hasn't started complaining any more, so I put my belief in that it will hold up. In order to get in more training, I did a wise move - I changed my work hours around so I can take a 2 hour lunch break. That gives me enough time to go home, run, shower and eat and travel back to work (on bike). The only minor drawback is I have to get up an hour earlier to go to work, but it is SO worth it!

Happpy New Running Year! I have been running very sparsely lately, and I just about to start it up a bit more, when my stupid achilles started bugging me again. Same as before. I don't know why it came back again, because I have not run much and it started hurting after not running for six days. Go figure. I'm hoping it will go away soon.

A natural product I recommend you look at is Hemp Hearts - they are tiny shelled hemp seeds than can help in several ways - fatique, diabetes, arthritis, and more.
Hemp Oil is a great oil that is healthier than soybean oil and olive oil.
Running Log
I have written a free training log for runners - check it out! It's the one I use myself, and I am quite happy with it, and so are all other runners who have signed up so far - they all love it! Give it a shot!
My Running Background
I started running in my early twenties, and have run many races since. My best results came 1997 - 2000, when my milage was at its highest. 10 - 5 km races is my favourite distance, and on the track I ran 31:35 for the 10,000 as my best time, and 15:21 on the 5,000 m. For half-marathon, my best time is 1.09:42. In 1999, I ran Victoria Marathon in 2.37.
In 2000 I got injured - chondromalacia - my kneecap was worn out the doctor said. They also told me I should pick a different sport. Well, I partly proved them wrong! I bought a great knee brace called Dual Action Knee Strap by Cho-Pat, and that really helped. If you have patella problems, check out these braces - they really helped me.
Nowadays, my knee problems seem better, probably mostly because I'm not doing the same amount of training as I used to do. I have problems with finding time - lots of work and a growing family. I don't run as fast as I used to, but I am happy being able to run at all!
