Fantastic Weather here! Running has been great around here lately. I've been running consistently, and although not high mileage, I've gotten in some good faster workouts. Yesterday was beautiful. I ran 8 x 400 m on the track, in shorts. It was 13 degrees Celsius at 6:30 at night! That is certainly not the standard here in Alberta! It was great. The splits span between 71 seconds down to 66 seconds on the last one. Great workout!

October 9th, Portland Marathon

I placed 34th overall, with the time of 2:51:09. 6th in my age category, 3 seconds from being 5th, which would have give me an award! I was on target for a 2:48 time until 37 km, when a long downhill converted my legs into foam. Denise PR'd and so did our friend Karen Toews. It was a great course, I really liked it. That darn downhill was my problem, not the hill going up to the bridge at mile 17. The volunteers were amazing, and there were all sorts of bands and entertainment along the course. Highly recommended marathon.

October 1st, Mizuno 10 km race
As a way to start the day of the IAAF World's Half Marathon Championships, the 10 km race started 8:00. I placed 3rd in 34:55, my fastest 10 km race in years, and I felt quite good the whole way. The race was won by an Italian runner, who was on the Italian National Team as an organizer. I asked him was his PR on the half marathon was -- his answer -- 1:02! I don't feel bad being outkicked my such a man.

My friend Karen and Derryl Toews had a great race too, running fast times this day. Karen won her age category easily. This was a good test for us, as we have Portlan Marathon up next weekend.

Portland Marathon up next Oct 9th
The time for my fall marathon is getting closer. I have not trained enough of course, around 70 kilometers per week. I have done a few good long runs, of which the longest was 2:49 and it felt pretty good. I am hoping to run the marathon in about that time too, I guess I will soon find out!World Masters Games Edmonton

The Games are over for this time, and the my last race was the half-marathon. It didn't go well for me. I ran with the lead group for quite some time, and in retrospect I should not have done so. I passed 10 km at 36:10 and was feeling pretty good. Unfortunately, the pace were beginning to take its toll on me at about 13-14 km. I had to slow down. I fell back in pace considerably for every kilometer, and people starting passing me. I was 3rd in my age category until about 19 km, and I couldn't respond when the guy passed me - I was at jogging pace at that time and I was totally spent. I struggled to the finish in 1:20:29, a 4th place in my age category but way behind the winning time of 1:14 something - Dennis Colburn won again.

It was a great week anyway, and we all had a lot of fun. It was really inspiring to see so many older people participating in these Masters Games, and the atmosphere has been so friendly and positive. I wouldn't mind going to Sydney, Australia in 2009, when the Games are held next time!

I won silver in the 5000 m race! It was a very hot afternoon, and I ran with the winner Dennis Colburn up until about 2000 m, but I could keep the 3:20 pace we were on. My splits were 3:20, 3:21, 3;28, 3:37 and 3:21. At 3000m, Stephen caught up with me and we ran slow for a while. I sat behind him and went hard with 250 m to go and that. Silver medal! A great day for me. The time was slow but I gave it all I had.

My first Masters Games race - 10 km road race. I missed the start. I know, it is embarrassing to even mention it, but I did it. I ran to the bathroom in the last minute; I thought they said 4 minutes to start. It was just 1 minute. Oh well, it happened. I lost 30-40 seconds on this. I ran okay, a little stressed out on the first km, which I passed in 3:19 - a little too fast. I then settled in and finished in about 35:30, although my official time is 36:03 or so. I improved with almost 2 minutes since my last 10km race in June, so I am okay with this.
I am now looking forward to the 5000m on Friday, where I hope to run under 17:15.

The 2005 World Masters Games are just around the corner! I'm signed up for the 10km road race, the 5000m on the track, and the half marathon. It will be very exciting! I am not in my best possible shape, but I'm sure it will be a lot of fun regardless of how I perform. My first race, the 10km race, starts on July 24 - wish me luck!

The Kananaskis 100 Mile Relay - whew! Our team Wetaskiwin Wingnuts finished 3rd again, same as last year. We had a great time, and the weather was pretty good most of the time. It's a fantastic relay - probably few relays offer this kind of scenery and experience.

I ran leg 5, and I did the typical mistake of going to fast early on. Leg 5 is brutal; it is almost 18 km - with an elevation gain of about 450 meters! Very steep. So this guy came and passed me at about 3km, so I thought I'd follow him. Felt good to until about 8 km. After that, I pretty much fell apart and hit the wall. The hill gets steeper and steeper, and I barely made it to the top without passing out. I finished 5 minutes or so slower than I should have, but I guess it was a good learning experience! You can see how shaky I look at the end of my leg. It was still a lot of fun - a real adventure that I'd do again any time!

Karen, Derryl, Tim, Gerhard and I at the Wetaskiwin Race Shortcut through the park 2005
Yesterday, I ran the Wetaskiwin race Shortcut Through The Park. It is a nice little run, and this time they had extended it to a 10km race, as well as a 5km race and 3km walk. It was a good workout for me. I was first with the time 37:24. I checked my HR at the end of the race, and to my surprise, it was 192!

I got sick for about 10 days; a viral infection got me coughing through the nights. It has cleared up, but I lost some important training.

We ran in the Wetaskiwin - Camrose relay this weekend. Great fun! The Wetaskiwin Road Runners made a great job getting this relay up and going again after a few years hiatus. Our team was first, and I ran the last 2 legs (total of around 19 km). Great workout and great weather. We had a lot of fun. Next awaits a few weeks of harder training before I run the Shorcut Through the Park in Wetaskwin.

Denise and I ran the Red Deer half-marathon today. We had good time, and the weather was great. I am not in great shape yet, but got a good workout today. I was 4th overall and 1st in my age category. Denise enjoyed her run too and we both are looking forward to a chance to run another half-marathon in the near future. See Red Deer Half-marathon Race results.

The web site for Puffin for a Muffin is up. It is a Road Race in Camrose coming in May 15. Come and run it if you can!

May 15, 2005
I ran the local race Puffin for a Muffin today, and placed 1st. It was really warm and it felt really hard to run today. My time was bad for me - 30:36, but what can I say other than haven't been training enough.
I also just signed up for the World Masters Games in Edmonton in July. I am doing the 10km road race, the 5000 m on the track, and the half marathon. I look forward to it, even though I'll get spanked big time!

April 29, 2005
My knee is not enjoying my running. It's starting to hurt again. I guess I put it to the test by starting to run twice a day. I am signed up for Red Deer half marathon by the way!

April 21, 2005
I'm getting in more training now, summer is almost here and it is very inspiring to run when it's getting warmer. I'm hoping to improve from last year's races. I'm looking forward to the K-100 relay again - a marvelous relay high up in Kananaskis country. I am doing the same leg again as last year, leg 4. It was there I hurt my foot, and it is still not 100%. Back to the scene of the crime, so to speak, hope I can avoid further injury.
