I got a new problem last month. I developed an infection in my left foot, and I also caught a bit of the flu. Just before this, I had a great workout of 8 x 1000, where 6 of them were at 3:20. Fastest workout for me this year. Ever since however, I've been having issues with colds and a sore throat. Bummer. My achilles problem is the same, not 100% but it's not getting worse. It's at 95% good I think. I have to stay of flat roads or else I can tell the tendon complains.

My training has been going pretty good the last couple of months. I've been thinking my achilles problem is gone. However, on the last faster workout (on Tuesday), I felt the old achilles pain flare up again. I am hoping I can keep it under control. Dang, this injury stuff is a pain, in more than one meaning of the word! The ACAC cross-country running season is starting now, and again I am assistant coach at Augustana Campus, University of Alberta. One of the girls on the team has been diligently following a training program I wrote, and she is now blazing fast. It shall be exciting to follow her and both the mens and women's teams' performance throughout the season.
Denise and I and the two older kids have been up in Jasper, a national park in Alberta. We camped there on the weekend and shared the camping spot with our friends the Toews from Wetaskiwin. The weather was fantastic! Over 25 degrees heat up in the mountains. Derryl and I went for a 21 kilometer long run, and I got some great photos I'll post later.
I ran the David Thompson Trail run on August 19, and since I've been training so little this year due to my injuries, I expected a tough race, and it was. Gerhard nearly beat me this time. I was 4th in the time of 38:52. Last year I won in 36:11 or something like that.
July 27, 2006I ran a 7 x 400 workout on the track yesterday at about 1:20 - 1:24. Right heel still a little weird, but it's not getting any worse. I have gotten a few good 8-10 kilometer runs in, just for basic fitness. I hope step it up a bit in August.
July 8, 2006Things are getting better for me - I have started running again and even though I have some issues with my left knee, my heel/achilles problem seems to be gone, more or less. Now I have long road to go in order to get in shape again, but that's okay. I'll be training for next year, although maybe there's some race I can try in the fall to see where I'm at. I even ran 5 x 1000 m on the track this week, but times were slow - around 3:45.

My running status - ACHILLES TENDONITIS. No fun. I am going to take enough rest so that it doesn't flare up again. It sucks to not be able to run and race right now, but what's a guy to do?

My running status - INJURED. I developed a sore achilles this spring, and it just won't go away. I'm sad to realize this will not be the running year I had hoped. I wanted to run maybe 2 marathons this year, and really try to get back in decent shape again. The only thing to do is to be patient, and recover. I am doing concentric calf exercises, hoping that by building calf mucle strength, the recovery process might be quicker. Any tips or advice appreciated.
March 15, 2006I have been to Sweden, where I had a great workout at the indoor track in UmeƄ. I ran 14 x 400 meters on a 200 meter track. It was great to see my (old) running friends againg! I really enjoyed it. Since then, I have been sick several times and the stay in Sweden left me with minimal time to run, so my running form is quite terrible right now. I hope to pick it up soon, and there is a possibility my wife and I might go to Spokane to run the Bloomsday 12k race.

I haven't written much here lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been running! Take a look at my log (link above) to see my training. I am determined to run more this winter (and more than Gerhard) than I've done the last 5 years. Denise and I are also thinking about doing at least one marathon this year, maybe even two! Vancouver is a possibility but we are not sure yet. The weather is still great for running, and I think I'll be able to run on the track some day soon. Just a little tiny bit of snow, and not very cold.
