Half marathons

Today, I ran a half-marathon (13.1 miles or 21.1 km) in Red Deer, Alberta. I placed 3rd overall, with the time 1:15:21.

Two weeks ago, I ran Vancouver half-marathon in 1:15:23 and was first Masters runner.

I enjoy half-marathons, because they are hard but not too hard. It's a distance I can race pretty hard the whole way, and usually I recover fairly well too. I'm an experienced racer, and this distance seems to suit me well, since I have some speed, and I have some endurance.

Marathons have never worked well for me. I guess either I've never trained properly for marathons, or I'm just not designed for racing that far. I tend to hit the wall after 30 - 35 kilometres, and the rest is just a struggle. This never happens for me in half-marathons.

Nevertheless, I have decided to try Edmonton Marathon this year. I am going to try and train a little harder/more this time, to see if I can go under 2:40 this time. I should be able to.

Next up is Calgary Half-Marathon, where I definitely want to go under 1:15. It is a flat and fast course, so I really think I can dip under that goal time by a bit. We'll see next week!
