I've had my Pod HD500 for a few weeks now, and I must say I am impressed. The flexibility this unit provides is extra-ordinary, and the tones are really stellar.
There will be more videos coming from me, regarding the HD500, but before I post my videos, I would like to share with you this video that I took at NAMM 2011. This is a demo by Paul Hindmarsh, a great player from the UK.
You may be wondering if you should get this unit or the M13? Well, there are similarities, but also differences. The M13 is a collection of stompboxes, and you run it straight into an amp. The HD500, has that too, but it also has speaker modeling and amp modeling, so you can use it straight into your computer, or through a PA.
The HD500 also has more flexibility. You can for example move your selected stompboxes around in the chain, and you can assign any of the 8 pedalboard switches to any effect you want. For example, if want to have your delay in front of your Marshall amp model, instead of after it, you can easily move it with a couple of button presses. This flexibility with assigning stompboxes to any footswitch, and placing the effect anywhere in your signal chain is tremendously useful.
Personally, I have found it works best for me to only use a couple of different patches, but for each patch, I have 6-8 stompboxes available. I also put the delay on footswitch 7, reverb on footswitch 8, etc, and then I stick to the same conventions for other patches I make. I do this just to make it easier for myself to rembember where I have delay and reverb, etc, regardless of which patch I'm using. If you have the same favourite effects assigned to different footswitches among your patches, it can get very confusing when you need to use a certain effect. Be smart, and make it easier for yourself by using the same effect for the same footswitch among your patches.
Now, have a listen to Paul's great demo of the POD HD500. This will give you an idea of how useful and how good sounding the HD500 really is.
