Hearing loss from music

I have hearing loss - Tinnitus. I admit it. Guess how I got it? By playing with loud bands. I don't have anything against drummers per se, but I am pretty confident that all the years I've played with hard-hitting drummers didn't exactly improve my hearing. Standing close to the drum set when the drummer is hitting the cymbals hard over and over is definitely bad for your ear drums.

Naturally, all those years playing loud guitar amps in rock bands also affected my hearing in a negative way. Simply put - if you don't want tinnitus, you need to prevent hearing loss from ever happening in the first place, which means - protect yourself.

However, I am not blaming anyone but myself. It was my choice (and stupidity) to play without ear plugs. I do think the sound changes dramatically when you wear some kind of ear protection, but I also think a person can get used to that. It is still better to have a strange sound on than have great sound but badly damaged hearing.

One of the worst culprits is actually iPods and headphones. Well, the actual usage of them is what I mean. Many people turn them up way too loud, and over time, it's well known that hearing loss often comes as a results from hours and hours of headphone usage at semi-high volumes. Be careful!

We are not alone
