You really must know guitar scales well in order to play freely. It's fine to just know one minor pentatonic position or box, and then just use your ears to guide you. That's how many blues greats played.
However, if you want to become a versatile guitarist, you simply must learn chords and scales as much as possible. What this does is give you a framework from which you can build your licks, your solos, your chords, your lines and ideas.
