I am sure you know that Prince is the KING of DMCA takedown notices. Prince is notorious for his disdain for the Internet and for fans posting any photos, music or videos that have anything to do with him.
So, interestingly enough, I recently became a target for his takedown regime! What happened was I received a slap on the wrist from Youtube. They took down a Prince guitar lesson that I had posted a while back. I also received a "Strike" and my youtube account switched to the status of "not in good standings" as a result.
Youtube did this because they received a complaint from Controversy Music about my video.
We have disabled the following material as a result of a third-party notification from Controversy Music claiming that this material is infringing:
Prince guitar lesson.Please note that under Section 512(f) of the Copyright Act, any person who knowingly materially misrepresents that material was disabled due to mistake or misidentification may be liable for damages.
I was aware that something like this could happen one day, and I knew very well that I played NO music whatsoever by Prince in this lesson. So, I filed a counter-notice, explaining the situation. Guess what? I won!
I think what happened is that Prince's team has tools in place to look for anything related to Prince, like "Prince music" or "Prince guitar", etc. Since my lesson was named "Prince Guitar Lesson", that caused the red flag to go up for someone over at Controversy Music. Had they watched the video, it would been clear that the video does not contain music by the Artist himself.
I am very glad I was able to get this cleared up. Youtube put the video back, without notifying me, a few weeks after I contact them back.
I renamed the video title after it was reinstated, just for fun, but also so that this doesn't happen again.
As for Prince, I just want to say - loosen up!
