Online Lessons
« on: February 13, 2013, 01:35:12 PM »
Hi there,
I'm new in these parts. Been poking around online looking for the best site for lessons. I've been playing off and on since I was a kid. Recently getting enthused about really digging into it.
Someone gave me a free trial for JamPlay and they have a lot of different teachers and a lot of different styles over there:  jamplay
Wondering if anyone has tried JamPlay and can compare it to Robert's offerings.

Thanks!

I've been a member of JamPlay for ... eeeek! ... 4 years.

It's a great site to learn on IF you find a teacher you can connect with in the genre that you're intersted in.

When I joined there, I'd taken an interest in getting into blues in a serious way - including original style of blues, not just blues rock. They have a teacher Hawkeye Herman, who learned his trade face to face from players like Son House, Brownie McGhee, Bukka White, Mance Lipscomb, Furry Lewis, and Lightin' Hopkins. Good credentials - and his immense enthusiasm and teaching methods taught me a huge amount. Also encountered a teacher called David Wallimann who was able to explain modes in a way that allowed me to play such a hugely bigger range of music - he totally de-mystified what until then had been a baffling concept to me - in 2001, David won first place for the Tal Farlow French national jazz contest which gave him a full paid scholarship to the CMA school of modern music in Valenciennes, France wher he graduated specializing in advance guitar with honors - again some good credentials. Also found a blues teacher there that got me understanding how to play proper blues slide for the first time.

Now having said that, there a lot of other teachers there with big followings who are good teachers for other pupils, but I don't connect with them. If they were the only eachers on the site - I'd not still be a member, good as they may be. Similarly a lot of players will not connect with the likes of Hawkeye Herman and David Wallimann the way I did. So it's very difficult to recommend a teaching site, or instructor to anyone else! They do have a lot of teachers and a lot of genres so I feel that increases the chances of finding a teacher that will suit you.

It's not really possible or fair to compare a huge guitar teaching concern like JamPlay with someone like Robert who produces some really excellent lessons in an easily understandable way - but he's one person, rather than 60+ teachers at JamPlay. I would say that if I'd encountered Robert 4+ years ago and started learning blues through his lessons it's quite possible that I'd not have joined JamPlay.

If you time it right and get membership at special rates which keep popping up it's possible to get annual membership for $100 - pretty good for unlimted access and you can't get many lessons locally for that price.

Thanks for that. I'm not really into blues. But I checked out the guy teaching funk/R&B just for fun. Michael Ripoll. He's pretty awesome. Here's his intro vid, if you're interested: youtu.be/eZ6jHyqSyYM
Never thought I would dig playing funk! Or would be able to. Always been just a straight acoustic rhythm player.

I'm not a big fan of most teachings out there.  I like how Robert teaches small bits here and there in the blues and rock genres.  I have purchased several  blues guitar series lessons from Steviesnacks.com, but never tried jamplay or any of the others out there like Next Level or Guitarjamz. But Steviesnacks is how I discovered Robert a few years ago.
