The Affordable Gibson- Melody Maker
« on: January 11, 2011, 01:03:01 PM »
I've found you can get these guitars for around $350 used.  I've seen one in person only once (Very few shops carry them around here).  Would anyone consider a stripped down Gibson like this?  Single pickup, slab body, no wings on the headstock.  Is like those people who buy the tiny BMW's just to say they own a BMW?  Or is this guitar really worth playing?

I definitely know what you're sayin', as far as the concept goes, "Buyin' a name". Anyways, a guitar like that wouldn't suit my needs. I'd prefer an Epi with two pickups, but that's just me.

I saw one of those in a local music store this past weekend. I was leaving when I saw it hanging on the rack and didn't take it down to look or play. I may go back and check it out though just to see how it plays.

The new Epiphone Nighthawk Custom looks interesting...

I think the Epi would be better-i have seen the Gibsons in G.C. with the stripped down finish and cheaper parts.i think its just for the name value

I have seen they do make these (or they did once) with two pickups.  They appear to be like single coil fender style pickups.  Still not sure if I'd ever get one.  Only famous person I know that plays one is Joan Jett... Any rock worthy stars out there play one?

i dunno, i think this is prolly the best deal you're gonna find, on a brand new GIBSON guitar.

Doesn't appeal to my tastes.

the idea,  (in my head, anyhow) is to buy the guitar with the soapbars, and swap 'em out for pafs or burstbuckers. with the added cost, you're still way under a comparable gibson

That 60's tribute is near impossible to get.  When it came out last year, no store around here had one because it was the most limited guitar they made due to a flood.

Going back to the melody maker, I did see a really cool used one with a bigsby and quite worn look.
