Newer Guitar Rock
« on: November 05, 2010, 04:11:08 PM »
I'm 47 years old and like most of you I've been cringing at whats on the radio.  Been doing that for years.  Most guitar threads tend to dwell on the golden days of Hendrix and Clapton etc.  For just a minute lets pretend we're all 21 again and just for the sake of argument, aren't that into metal and hip hop.  What's out there thats relavant and new?

Y'know, thats a very, very good question.  Too bad I, for one am unable to think of anything. I don't know about new, but I'd probably be the youngest among a bunch of older guys playin' blues music.

I'm not sure, with my poor english, to understand exactly what you say
Perhaps, you regret the old time rock and blues music?
Me too if there is the message
I like rap for its flow rhythm vocal
But  the music behind is so poor and inexistent that I prefer read the text (sorry, I don't want to heart anybody)
The fashion imposed by the Majors (money is money) is so hard that everybody play the same thing
Rap is born on the street with no means
The music of the poor man, like Blues yesterday
Today, the rap stars and its majors pay million dollars to play music as poor as at the origin!
Pityfull
I thought I was definitely close to the rap music for that reason  My ears were still hungry of music
Fortunately, one day, this album came to my ears by a friend of mine
It blowed my mind
It was the missing link between Blues and Rap
That guy made the connection
He's completely unknown in France though I would like bye other albums
I wish he is known in USA
Chris Thomas playin' "21st century blues...irom da 'hood" published 1994
You'll ear that he doesn't only rap, but he sings also
This guy plays also guitars on all tracks
For those who love Blues Rock guitars and are not afraid by rap singer, this album is for you
I discovered ten years ago, but it's still on my top ten
Wish you 'll enjoy

Hard to say what I'd be into if I was 21 today. Probably not what I was into when I was actually 21.

As to what I like that's new today, a lot of it; actually most of it, you don't hear on the radio. I like most of the Band of Heathens stuff, most of Ray Wylie Hubbard's stuff, especially his latest, Randy Rogers, although he seems to be turning a bit pop country. Don't like pop country. Some of Hayes Carl's stuff is good and Todd Snider also.

I like the blues a lot too but most of the artists I listen to are dead.  :(

I think every generation has said that as they "mature."  There is plenty out there, but you don't find it on top 40 radio.  You have to look for it.  Today, the internet makes that relatively easy.  An example of one of my current favorites is Derek Trucks.

Yeah, Derek Trucks. I forgot about him. He is, IMO, one of the better Blues/Blues Rock players out there.

A related band is Gov't Mule. They're pretty good also and I think they just released a new album about a year ago, although I haven't heard it.

warren haynes and derek trucks are 2 of my all time favs.
when they play worried down with the blues, i sometimes forget to breathe. it's that good.

another awesome song warren appears on is "cortez the killer", with dave mathews band. watch when warren starts really going off at about 7 minutes or so,  and dave looks back at his drummer with a look of HOLY SMOKES!  a guy on another forum turned me on to this video, it's a great one.
warren is, imo, the most emotive guitar player on the earth right now.

I've heard of Derek Trucks, but never really heard him play (extensively) until now. Man, I missed out on alot of gee-tar players! It makes me sorry I quit playin' for nine years, but I'm still glad I came back.

I like Derek Trucks a lot too.  My wife would consider it old fashiond.  So I guess part of my question should have been whats out there that my wife wouldn't consider old fashioned?  Or if you don't know my wife, what could be construed as modern rock?  All they play on the radio around here is Daughtry.  Muse counts.  They're pretty rockin and creative.  I posted this thread on another forum and one guy posted a band caled Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.   I liked them a ton.  Really creative.  May have drug problems, but really good.

Not sure I'd be aware of her if I was 21 but Ana Popovic has some hot licks, and easy on the eyes too!!

http://www.anapopovic.com/

Also, Oli Brown has a lot going for him. I'd love to see these two on a double billing.

Ok, I'm 34 and I do struggle with finding music that has more of my parents music than what's mainstream.  However, there is an incredible guitarist/singer/songwriter from the Isle of Man.  The kid's name is Davy Knowles.  He's only 22, but he is one of my top 10 guitarists of all time. (Yes, he's that good).  He writes his own stuff and his last album was produced by Peter Frampton.  He currently tours with Joe Satrani and some of the guys from Gov't Mule.  The kid flat out rocks.  Look him up on youtube.  His band is Backdoor Slam.

...And of course there is Eric Johnson. Not exactly new, but always blows me away! Lots on YouTube.

Sorry, but the "shredders" just don't do anything for me personally.
