Just joined, trying to learn at 53. I found the website looking at guitar reviews before I bought one. I bought an online lesson and really enjoy it. I was surprised to find out you are close by. I end up in Camrose once a year after volunteering at the MS150. Do you ever play in Edmonton. Anyone have any tips for headphones for practice, for the sanity of everyone else in the house I should buy some. I know headphones can't make a $100 amp sound great and I don't need volume (trying to save what is left of my hearing). I love what I have seen here so far.

Welcome GaryP. Great bunch of folk here. Anyway, did you mean you were looking for headphones themselves (there are so many to choose from) or a device (lots there as well) to plug them into?

Hi Thanks for the quick reply. I bought a Fender mustang 1 small amp and just need headphones to plug into it. I don't know if there is anything in particular I need that is best for guitar (I may get a better amp so that may matter as well). I am looking forward to some ideas and trading information with everyone. I have never posted on an online forum  before so I still have to figure this out.

A good set of "closed back" headphones ought to do the trick. They'll give you the best bass response. I don't know if that Mustang amp of yours will give you true speaker emulation through the headphone jack or not, but that's the only way you'll be able to appreciate what you hear. For example, if you had a Frontman amp, it will suck when you use the headphone jack, because you're getting a straight "wide open" signal to the headphone jack. Headphones can range in price from $19 to beyond $400 and points in between. Time to do some homework and find out what works for you. Good luck.

I've also got a Mustang I. It does a pretty good job of speaker emulation when listening through headphones. I use a pair of Samson CH700 Studio Reference headphones. They were cheap but do a good job not only for plugging into the Mustang but for when I mix recordings.

Regarding headphones, these AKGs are fantastic - http://amzn.to/zZHfZg

Don't buy the super-cheap ones - you'll end up regretting that. These ones sound great for anything, and are very comfortable too.
