I was at the local music store today exchanging my daughter's chelo for a viola.  While waiting for the guy to figure out what she needed, I was looking at a really cool Hofner Semi-hollow very simuliar to this guitar.  I wish I was there long enough to try it out...

the epiphone is made of plywood.  this one is all maple, and has a HUGE block of maple inside to add sustain.

A lot of hollow body guitars, including Gibsons, are plywood; only they call it laminate. It's the same thing; two or more pieces of wood glued together in a vertical stack.

Laminate just makes it sound better.  ;D

Plywood makes you think of the stuff you buy in 4X8 sheets at Home Depot. No one uses that to make guitars. At least I hope they don't!  :o

I believe great electronics more than make up for the composition of the wood, with exception to acoustic guitars.

Diaper - That does look like a nice purchase.  It should be a very versatile guitar.  Congratulations and enjoy.

i would agree with that only in part.  you can get away with that if you remove tone from the equation by laying in lots of distortion and effects on a solid body guitar.
but if you're playing some jazz, or something with clean tones and complicated chords, great pickups and pots/caps  won't make up for crappy wood. 
just my opinion, ymmv
