John Scofield is one of my big heroes. He is one of the best guitar players on the planet, don't you ever forget that. He's not that mainstream though, so you may not have heard of him. He plays jazz, funk-jazz, funk-blues, and the like. I view him as a jazz musician with a blues guitar influence. He is, simply put, a Master at what he does.
I have learned so much from listening and transcribing his albums. It can be challenging to figure out what he's doing, so here is a lick I have transcribed for you. This lick is from the tune "Whip The Mule", from his album "Hand Jive" - you can get this from Amazon, see below.
Let me know how you enjoyed this lesson!

Robert,
I thought I was the only one to know about John Scofield. Yes, a true guitar master. He must be getting really well known if you've heard about him way up in Canada! :>]
Thanks, Robert. Cool lick and nice job of showing how it's done.
Comment added on May 12, 2011Great lesson Robert, many thanks. As one of the many people that voted for a Schofield lesson, I really appreciate this - especially as it ties into with something I was trying to do already. I prefer the lessons that are in B+W, a nice touch.
