Slowing down songs is another great way to learn from records and your song collection. I use Song Surgeon, which works really well for this. Check it out.

Guitar Lesson Overview

Here's an approach I often use when improvising. Take that Minor Blues Scale or Minor Pentatonic, and add the major 6th. Hip sound! I recommend learning to hear all the different intervals - it helps you play more melodically. There are ear training books and website, a couple I like are good-ear.com and musictheory.net.
